Spotlight on savings and lifestyle enhancement with Philips’ LED Lamps, LED Indoor Lighting and LED Light Fittings at ‘Philips LED The Way’ event

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Philips, the global leader in lighting, continued its push to drive greater LED adoption in the Malaysian market, with a showcase of its comprehensive cutting-edge LED solutions to partners and retailers at the ‘Philips LED The Way’ event, the first such display of Philips’ holistic LED ecosystem. The showcase, which saw more than 250 lighting specialists and retailers experiencing the latest benefits of LED first hand, was organised to highlight Philips’ innovative range of LED lighting solutions.

Adrine Ong, Philips General Manager, Lighting Division said, "We see a future where light goes beyond illumination - where the potential of light is understood so profoundly that we can do the impossible. With LED technology, Philips is focusing on enhancing people’s lives with light. Philips’ range of lighting solutions enables us to transform spaces and create an ideal ambiance to suit the mood and occasion. There are endless possibilities in LED designs to provide for the expression of identity and can match any style of interior. Philips is committed to provide affordable lighting solutions that allow everyone to switch to LED."

At the event, retailers were exposed to LED lamps, LED indoor lighting and LED Luminaires – a portfolio that offers the consumer a complete solution for their lighting needs. They also had fun with special activities including the LED Paddle Power Challenge, a pedalling game that highlighted the minimal energy levels needed to power LED bulbs; the LED Cool Twist, a bulb installation game that highlighted the minimal heat emission of LED bulbs; and the LED Instant On, a speed and concentration game that highlighted the comfort levels of LED bulbs, which are glare-free, do not have visible flickering, and do not have ultraviolet emissions.

What are the benefits of using LED Lights?

  • Superior light quality: Provides vivid lights with natural shades of white which does not provide glare and little or no forward facing heat generated and thus provides a comfortable experience on the eyes.
  • Ambient lighting: LED lighting technology offers benefits and possibilities in dynamic design that cannot be achieved with conventional lighting. With smaller sizes, light bulbs can be for flexible and versatile in design. LED lighting solutions are also ideal for creating an ambient atmosphere and enhance the visual impact of a living space. Selected LED lights are dimmable enabling homeowners to create an ambient environment.
  • Longer-lasting: Depending on the model, have a typical lifetime of 15,000 - 20,000 hours. This translates into 15-20 years before replacement is required (based on an average use of 2.7 hours per day) whilst incandescent bulbs typically last for approximately 18 months.
  • Reduced maintenance cost: Very efficient and durable and thus reducing frequent replacement expenses.
  • More energy-efficient: More efficient than incandescent and halogen light sources, using up to 85% less energy without compromise on lighting performance.
  • Environmentally-friendly: Do not contain any lead or mercury. And since they last longer, there is less waste disposal in the environment. LEDs also do not emit UV rays.
  • Heat Management: An incandescent lamp only manages to convert approximately 8% of the electricity it consumes into light whilst the rest to heat. With LED light bulbs, approximately 15-25% of the energy consumed is converted into light. As such, LED produces little or no forward facing heat. Heat is conducted by the built-in heat sync.
  • Ease of use: As inherently digital devices, LEDs produce light that can be intelligently controlled to dynamically customize environments

LED products account for 34% of Philips lighting sales globally. "By 2015, it is projected that the majority of sales in the lighting market will be for LED lighting – at 55%. This is a catalyst for our push to grow the LED lighting market in Malaysia," Ong said.

There has been a revolution in lighting technology over the past 10 years. By switching to the latest LED technology, huge savings in energy costs and a large reduction in carbon dioxide emissions can be achieved. With lighting consuming 19% of all electricity in the world, a reduction of 20% on the world’s lighting energy consumption would save EUR 53 billion  in energy costs per year – equivalent to 296 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, 779 million barrels of oil per year, or the annual output of 265 medium-sized power stations at 2TWh per year. At COP15 in Copenhagen, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that Malaysia is adopting an indicator of voluntary reduction of up to 40% in terms of emissions intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the year 2020 compared to 2005 levels.
